Coverboards are used for sampling herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians). Herpetofauna often seek out natural cover objects such as rocks and locks for thermoregulation and shelter. Using artificial cover objects, such as pieces of plywood or carpet, researchers can create microhabitats for herpetofauna that can be easily surveyed without disturbing the natural habitat. To the left is an example of one of the boards we're using for this project.
Checking coverboards too often can make them less effective - so please do not disturb the boards you find! If you'd like to get involved with checking the boards and collecting data, please email sdrecwildlife AT gmail.com.
